The BHB (un-) conference

Where do I even begin to express what an amazing, inspirational weekend I had? If you have not heard about the BigHearted Business yet – just briefly it is about creative people who want to learn about business, and business people who want to learn about creativity, in ways that make sense. Their motto “do what you love, make money, save the world”. It’s called an (un-) conference because it is not your traditional business conference, attention to detail has been taken into consideration from the venue (the Regal Ballroom – Melbourne) where it was beautifully styled and the amazing food (by Joost) served which was absolutely delicious and waste free, yes more about that later. Founded by the talented musician Clare Bowditch, she has created a community in a time where it is much needed, full of inspiration, support and caring for all us creative sensitive types and for those who want to add creativity into their lives. Two days filled with an amazing panel of speakers.

Something happens when you are in a room full of women (and 30 men), listening to Clare and all the other amazing speakers. Instantly you feel a connection, maybe because we are all there for the same reason. In search of connection, understanding and knowing that you are not alone. Clare had us all singing, yes, for those who know me well I don’t sing but I sang for Clare! There was also a lot of dancing, so not your average conference.

My reason for desperately wanting to be a part of this years’ BHB was because lately I felt I was losing direction. I am multi passionate, (many creatives are), I like doing and making different things. I have many interests. I was so confused and overwhelmed by this that I was missing the bigger picture. Listening to all the panel speakers, the message was very clear and I was not the only one, that failure is a good thing and that you should do what is related to your values. That you should say YES to things that are out of your comfort zone because you don’t know where they might lead and to say NO more often and not make decisions based on obligation, to be different, to be you and to keep going. Find like minded people, have an open heart and be generous. To really know your values and to live by them, to know what success means to you and not what you think others want from you or someone else’s idea of success. Realising that there is no magic formula how to make it all work and to live by example. If you don’t like what you see then YOU make the change. To make small changes because it will make a difference, never stop learning. Even the people you think have “made it” are still figuring it all out. It’s okay to change your mind.

Another stand out for me was around collaboration, work with others because you cannot do it alone. To find the people who can assist in the things that you don’t like or not good at. It all makes sense; it’s pretty simple and straightforward. I have heard most of it before but the way this event has been put together brings it in a different light and it worked for me.

I was absolutely blown away in awe and inspiration when Joost Bakker came on stage. Seriously this guy is unbelievable. He provided all the food with his crew (of Silo and The Greenhouse) not only was it organic, vegetarian, and waste-free. There was NO rubbish, over 500 people, that in it self is incredible and has inspired me to start thinking about what I buy and what I do. Fabian Dattner was another inspiring speaker, such a strong and remarkable woman who did not pull any punches and I can’t even begin to talk about Danielle La Porte. I will be honest before BHB I had never heard of Danielle and have I been missing out! I’m ordering her books quick smart. Everyone that contributed was fantastic and to be honest I am only scratching the surface.

I have a bit of work to do now and looking forward to the challenges that lay ahead. So watch this space!

My art...

I’ve been hesitant in showing my paintings for a while now, it’s a different story with my screen printing and craft work – so lately I’ve been asking myself the question; Why?

To be honest it’s the fear of being judged, mainly because I do not have an Arts degree, even though I’ve always wanted to have one. Without the qualifications – I think to myself, what gives me the right to paint? However, in saying that when I like an artist and discover that they are self taught, I actually admire that artist for having the courage to put themselves out there and actually doing it! And then say to myself, I wish I were a bit more like that, I wish I had more courage.

When I am painting I feel so happy and my day becomes consumed in colours and shapes and before I know it, I realise that it has been hours since I’ve had a coffee or even had something to eat! To put it simply it gives me joy.

So what has caused the change? It’s been a long process (and it's still ongoing) but lately it feels that it is all coming together. I’ve been reading, reading and reading. My amazing husband borrowed the book by Robert Holden 'Success Intelligence' many years ago and it all began from there. The Artist’s Way has been very inspirational. Listening to podcasts by Marisa from Creative Thursday and signing up and completing different on-line courses. Blog Your Way by Holly Becker being one of them. Attending a colour workshop by Shannon Fricke. Having a wonderful and talented friend Michelle (michelle morris interiors) and going through a creative journey together and supporting one another. Re-connecting with an old school friend, Kelly, and picking up where we left off, having conversations about art, books and getting together over food. Having two amazing mentors (Bob and Jo) who see something in me that I cannot and having their continued support over the years.

Meeting like minded people; so grateful for meeting Lisa (the red thread) a few years ago when she was doing markets and told me about the ABCD social (previously meet-up) and meeting truely amazing women and becoming friends, joining instagram and realising what a supportive and creative community it is. Attending the BHB morning tea and watching the weekly inspiration bombs – I have the biggest girl crush on ClareBowditch and think what she is doing is amazing. Having someone I admire purchase one of my paintings when she walked into my studio, when I only had them up as display, as no-one really visits! Then having another person I respect buy one when I took a few to a market, just to see on the off-chance if anyone would be interested.

For me, it was about acceptance but realising more and more that it’s about confidence and the connection to others with what I'm doing. Having supportive people around me, and realising I'm not on my own.

I'm finally getting it – it makes me happy.

By being happy, I'm actually living my dream, not continually over analysing every thought. So from now on I will be sharing my art…

2013 advent calendar (free template)

Like so many Christmas is my favorite time of year – I love it all, the decorating, baking, wrapping, making, Christmas songs and most importantly sharing it with family and friends. I must admit having little ones is what makes it so exciting. Each year I’ve been making my own advent calendars for the kids and this year I thought I would share it with you! My inspiration came from one of my favorite blogs Oh happy day so this is my take on it. I’ve only made six little houses so far but was too excited and had to share. You can make it easy for yourself by making one house and changing the number flag each day or if you are eager you can make 24 one for each day. Print out the house template on card and the numbered flags on coloured paper of your choice. The cute little felt star I bought from tres divin. You could get the kids involved by letting them decorate each one with stickers or they could paint or draw on each one.

The lovely Steph from Bondville will be celebrating 10 years of writing on her beautiful blog and what a way to celebrate by hosting a charity auction for the Children’s Cancer Institute Australia. There are so many talented creatives taking part. Please take the time to have a look, spread the word and take part for such a great cause.

More than just a workshop.

I received an email from my sister-in-law who lives in Dubai to sponsor her to raise funds for a very worthy cause. She will be running 10km in the Dubai Marathon 2014 for Rashid Paediatric Therapy Centre for the amazing work they do for disabled children on behalf of her son Marco, our nephew.

So I thought that with the announcement of my workshops that for every booking $5 will go towards this worthy cause.

If you're unable to join my classes but would still like to make a donation you can do so here.

Join me for 2 1/2 hours of paper flower making to decorate your Christmas presents or paper wreath making to decorate your home or give as a gift.

There will be tea drinking and yummy treats served whilst listening to festive music to get us into the Christmas spirit.

School holidays

Last weeks school holiday workshops were lots of fun! – we made felt flower hair clips, cross stitch heart cards, tassle necklaces, fabric art, created some early Christmas decorations and babushka dolls. Also, had my first craft birthday party where the girls created their own tote bag.

Meanwhile I love having my kids around even though I feel like I am feeding machine – they don’t stop eating all day! We watched many movies, went to the beach and spent quality time together. The school holidays are nearly over and I know I am not the only one saying this but this year is speeding by too quickly and Christmas is around the corner. I really want to slow things down.
